4D Number Plates
Are 4D Number Plates Legal?
Yes, as long as they’re made to DVLA standards.
All of our road-compliant 4D plates follow the same rules as standard plates, meaning you’re fully covered for UK road use. They use the correct font, spacing, and reflective material, and clearly display the required supplier info and BS AU 145e standards.
In short: you get the bold, raised look you want without breaking the rules.
If you’re after something a bit more creative, we also offer 4D show plates, which let you go wild with fonts, colours, and layouts, perfect for events, displays, or garage décor (just not for the road).
For your 4D plate to pass the DVLA test, it needs to:
- Use the Charles Wright font
- Follow correct spacing and margin rules
- Be made from reflective, durable materials
- Include supplier details and BS AU 145e marking
Stick to those, and you’re golden.
What’s the Difference Between 4D and 3D Plates?
It comes down to the materials used to make the characters. 3D plates are resin-based which makes them more glossy and rounded. 4D, on the other hand, uses laser-cut acrylic for a sharper and bolder finish.
Both ‘come out’ from the plate, but 4D are usually more elevated, too. It’s a small difference, but a noticeable one. Essentially, the main differences between 4D and 3D plates comes down to the materials and how they’re made.
We’re regularly asked which is better, but it is a purely subjective matter. Both are commonly used and look smart.
