Road-Compliant Motorbike Plates

If your bike’s hitting the road, your plate needs to meet DVLA standards. Every plate we produce for road use meets the latest BS AU 145e standards and is made to handle life outdoors.

Our standard bike plates are:

  • Correctly sized – The legal UK minimum is 9 x 7 inches (228mm x 178mm).
  • Easy to read – Made using the approved Charles Wright font with perfect spacing.
  • Highly reflective – For clear visibility day and night.
  • Fully marked – With supplier details and the official British Standard code.

And remember, you only need a rear plate on a motorbike. Front plates aren’t required anymore.

Motorbike Show Plates

Got a vintage bike, a collector’s piece, or just want something eye-catching for display? Our motorbike show plates let you break all the rules (legally).

These plates are made for off-road use and perfect for bike meets, exhibitions, photo shoots, or even wall art in your garage.

When building your show plate, you can:

  • Pick from a range of fonts and colours
  • Add custom badges, borders, or flags
  • Include a slogan or name for a personal touch
  • Play with text styles or spacing for a creative look

If you want a design that’s extra special (or, can’t be created on our Plate Builder), then let us know. Our design team can help bring your idea to life.

Note: Show plates aren’t road-legal, but they’re perfect for adding your personality to your motorbike.

Motorbike Plates to Fit Every Ride

Got a sports bike, cruiser, or moped and wondering what size plate you need? Don’t stress it, we’ve got plates to suit every kind of motorbike.

We make number plates in all shapes and sizes, from compact scooter plates to wide cruiser plates. Whether you’re after a road-compliant road plate or a show plate for your collection, we’ll make sure it looks spot-on for your bike.

What Plates Fit Which Bikes?

  • Standard Motorbikes (Sports, Adventure & Touring) – The most common type of bike on UK roads. These need plates that meet DVLA standards. We’ll make sure yours is 100% compliant and built to last.
  • Cruisers and Custom Bikes – These big, low-profile machines often suit slightly larger plates that complement their wide build.
  • Mopeds and Scooters – Smaller bikes, smaller plates! We make compact, tidy options that fit neatly without breaking any rules.
  • Dirt Bikes and Off-Road Motorcycles – If your bike’s used only on private land, you don’t need a plate. But if it’s road-registered, you’ll need a compliant rear plate, we can help with both.
  • Classic Bikes – Keep it authentic with period-style plates or go for a custom show plate for display. Either way, we’ll make sure it looks the part.

FAQs

What size does my motorbike number plate need to be?

For UK roads, your plate must be at least 9 inches (228mm) wide by 7 inches (178mm) high, with letters 64mm tall and 44mm wide. It also has to use the official DVLA font and spacing.

What happens if I ride with an illegal number plate?

Running a plate that’s too small or doesn’t meet legal standards can land you with a £100 fine, an MOT fail, and run into problems with ANPR cameras. When you buy from Great Plates, our motorcycle plates are built to meet all DVLA rules.

Do you offer plates for mopeds and scooters?

Absolutely! We make plates for all kinds of bikes. From mopeds and scooters to sports bikes, cruisers, and touring models. Whatever you ride, we’ve got the perfect plate.

Are motorbike number plates different from car plates?

Yes. Motorbikes only need a rear plate, and they’re smaller than car plates. If you try fitting a car plate to your bike (or vice versa), it won’t meet road-legal standards and it’ll look weird!

Can I have a smaller motorbike plate for a cleaner look?

For the road, sadly, no. The DVLA has strict minimum sizes for motorbike plates.

But if it’s for show or off-road use, you can go as small and creative as you like!

Can I change the font or spacing on my bike plate?

Not on road plates. They must use the Charles Wright font with legal spacing.

However, for show plates, you can go wild with custom fonts, spacing, and colours.

Can I get a 3D or 4D motorbike plate?

You can! Both 3D gel and 4D acrylic lettering are legal as long as they follow the BS AU 145e standards for reflectivity and spacing.

Are tinted motorbike plates legal?

Nope, tinted or smoked plates aren’t road-legal. UK law requires plates to have a clear yellow reflective background so they’re easy to read in all conditions.

Do I need to send documents to order from Great Plates?

No documents needed here! Since we’re based in the Channel Islands, you can design and order your motorbike plate, road-compliant or show, without sending over any paperwork.

Do you offer different motorbike plate sizes?

Yes! While the standard UK size is 228mm x 178mm (9 x 7 inches), we also stock plenty of smaller options that are perfect for show plates or unique bike setups. Speak to our team to find out all the sizes we offer.
